5 Reasons People Do Not Get Help

Pilli - 5 Reasons People Do Not Get Help

5 Reasons People Do Not Get Help

 1. Shame

    • Many people are ashamed to reach out to a professional to get the help and/or support that they need. This shame is usually learned from family, friends, culture, or society. This is a huge reason why Pilli created a product that reduces shame associated with help.
    2. Lack of Resources
      • You might not know where to start! Big cities are usual filled with countless resources and groups. In more rural areas, local resources might be scarce and lack diversity. Good news! There are tons of online communities that offer support, advice, and reliable information.

      3. Confusion – where do I start?!
        • Do I need a psychiatrist? Primary physician? Therapist? Specialized doctor? Psychologist? What’s the difference? How can I find a good one? In my area? Who takes my insurance and is affordable!?
        • Don’t be intimidated by the labels, degrees, and acronyms. Reach out to whoever you think might work and ask for their opinion. Health professionals are great resources for referrals and clarification.

        4. Stigma
          • Stigma is like shame’s ugly stepsister. Stigma is a MAJOR block for so many of us. Pushing past negative thoughts can be challenging but your future self will thank you. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

          5. Bad Experiences
            • Oh, the horror stories I have heard about doctors, therapists, and every other type of health professional. It’s terribly disappointing when you put in all this work to better your life and you have a negative experience. Whether it’s discrimination, minimization, inappropriate comments, or just not a good fit… don’t get discouraged! Learn from this experience so that you can know exactly what you do not want moving forward.
